mat vs. chair yoga: which one is best for you?

Yoga comes in many forms, making it accessible to people of all fitness levels. Mat and chair yoga each offer unique benefits, and while choice is not necessary, we thought it would be fun to compare and contrast the two and give people the knowledge of their curious differences and benefits.

Mat Yoga: A Grounded, Dynamic Practice

Mat yoga involves practicing poses on the floor, allowing for a wider range of movement. It strengthens muscles, enhances flexibility, and improves coordination.

Poses like Downward-Facing Dog and Warrior I engage the entire body, while seated stretches and lying postures encourage deep relaxation. Some sessions are gentle, while others can be physically demanding.

The yoga mat itself is an important part of maintaining stability during your flow. The material of the mat keeps feet and hands from sliding off while providing a somewhat soft surface that prevents bruises.

Mats are also very customizable! Having your own allows for control of cleanliness. Some can have ridges for feet that massage pressure points. There are always choices of different colors and varying thicknesses and materials.

Chair Yoga: Accessible and Gentle

Chair yoga is an alternative perfect for individuals with limited mobility, balance concerns, or those who spend long hours sitting. This requires the least amount of gear and is often looked at for “quick office flows.”  Movements such as Seated Assisted Arm Stretch, Goddess Chair Pose and Seated Assisted twist provide similar benefits to mat yoga without putting stress on the joints.

Being seated in a chair allows for much easier body control, this makes Chair Yoga perfect for people with injuries or with mobility issues. The gentle exercises and stretches are a good start to helping blood flow and developing muscle slowly.

All in all, it is fair to say that there isn’t technically a “correct” choice. Subjectivity is key. Practicing the “right” kind of yoga depends on your mobility, strength, and personal preferences. At the end of this post we find it important to remind you that having fun and feeling good should be what you focus on at the end of the day.  Be bold. Try new things. Make your yoga practice yours.
