the benefits of breathing exercises in yoga

Yoga combines physical movement with mindful breathing to create a powerful tool for relieving anxiety. Deep, controlled breaths calm the nervous system, lower stress levels, and bring clarity to the mind.
Here are five yoga poses our Yoga experts curated to help promote relaxation and reduce anxiety:

1. Chair Cobra Pose
This first one is for those in chairs. A gentle backbend opens the chest and encourages deep breathing. Sit tall in your chair, place your hands on the armrests or your seat, and arch your back slightly as you inhale deeply. Tighten your back. Exhale as you return to neutral.
Repeat for 5 breaths to release tension.

2. Prayer Pose
Whether you’re standing or seated, this one is a classic that helps you center yourself no matter the circumstances. Bring your palms together at your chest and close your eyes. Focus on slow, even breathing. This meditative pose encourages mindfulness and emotional balance. Feel free to dip your chin toward your hands for extra comfort.
Hold for a few minutes to center yourself.

3. Knee Head Down Chair Pose
This forward bend soothes the nervous system and allows you a moment of silent respite in the office or at home in front of your computer. Bring your knee up toward your chest and connect it with your forehead while seated.
Breathe deeply, allowing the stretch to release stress.
After two or three minutes, change the legs.

4. Bound Angle Pose
This pose helps release tight hips and find inner peace. Sit with your feet together and knees wide, pressing the soles of your feet together. Place your hands on your feet, inhale deeply, and exhale slowly before leaning forward. Focusing on the stretch, feel the burn.
Hold the Bound Angle Pose for 30 seconds to a minute.

Meditation in yoga is known to help improve mental clarity and relaxation. This happens through the concentrated focus on breathing exercises which promotes self-awareness. Controlled breathing calms the nervous system, reducing stress and anxiety. Through breath work, meditation becomes a powerful tool for achieving inner peace and emotional balance.
